Stories of Autumn

These photographs were taken during the Fall of 2020 in New Hampshire and Maine. Amidst a global pandemic in a fragmented nation, I was reminded of nature’s different perspectives on time, and of the brilliance and ephemerality of life on our planet.

A light in the window. (From the park service: “In 1891 when Ruth Priscilla Colbath, then 41, was preparing dinner, her husband Thomas Colbath, left the house, saying he would be back ‘in a little while.’ As darkness fell, she placed a lamp in the window to guide him, but he did not come home. Every year, for the remaining 39 years of her life, Ruth placed a lamp in the window, hoping he would return. Thomas finally came back 3 years after her death, having been away for 42 years. Legend has it that he may have visited far away places such as Panama, Cuba, and California.”)
